What is Think-Family Schools?

Parental mental illness (PMI) is a significant public health issue across the globe.

• Around 2 million children in the UK have a parent with a mental illness

• 29% of young carers in the UK - over 50,000 children and young people - care for a family member with mental health problems

Having a mental illness does not necessarily make anyone a bad parent, but it can make it more difficult for families to cope. Families may be feeling stigmatized, and children and young people can find it confusing and distressing. They may also have hidden caring responsibilities. This can affect how well well they attend and engage with school. Having appropriate information about mental health and a trusted adult to talk to can make a big difference.

This training, run jointly by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and De Montfort University, seeks to raise awareness about how PMI can affect young people and families, and children's experiences of school. It will also introduce some important ways that children and families can be supported and provide resources that can be used by school staff, children and families.
