In Leicestershire, the vast majority of schools have already met the minimum criteria necessary to achieve National Healthy School Status (NHSS). As a result we are inviting those schools who achieved NHSS back in 2005/2006 to be part of the first phase of schools in Leicestershire to be part of the Healthy Schools Enhancement Model, which will enable schools to continue to build upon their good practice.
The Healthy Schools Enhancement Model is the start of a new journey for schools, but will build upon the good practice already taking place. The vision of the 21st Century School has at its heart the need to address all elements of the lives of children and young people, with a particular focus on health and well-being. To ensure that schools are doing this in an effective way, Ofsted with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) have developed indicators that reflect a school's contribution to the well-being of pupils. With this in mind, the Healthy Schools Enhancement Model has been designed to help schools develop the wider thinking and planning they will need to do in order to achieve better outcomes around health and well-being.
As this is a new model schools which achieved NHSS in 2005, 2006 or 2007 will have an extended time period in which to re-validate and will retain NHSS in this period. Your allocated advisor will contact you in due course to explain what this means for you and your school.
