Parents and carers are encouraged to talk to their teenagers about relationships and sex.
Leicestershire's Teenage Pregnancy Partnership has launched a campaign to encourage parents and carers to take time out to talk to their sons and daughters about relationships and sex.
Research has found that over a quarter of teenagers feel confused, worried and even scared about relationships and sex, and that most teenagers would appreciate more opportunities to talk to their parent or carer about it.
The "It's time to talk" campaign provides resources to help make it less daunting for parents and carers to start the conversation. Parents and carers can also access support on talking to their young people about relationships and sexual health from national charity Family Lives by calling 0808 800 22 22 or by visiting the Got a Teenager Website
Leaflets offering advice to parents on what to speak to their children about and how to initiate the conversations are available in County Hall reception and have also been distributed to schools, GPs and libraries.
These leaflets include tips such as:
- Use everyday media to approach the subject - TV, radio, magazines, the internet - you won't be short on options
Talk about how the issues affect other people- celebrities can be good common ground and this can make it less embarrassing.
